5 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER

Feel free to share any random trivia you have in the comments below!

  1. So remember how in the play the Ember Island Players did Toph was a huge man of pure muscle? This is pretty much Toph’s initial character sketch. Toph wasn’t originally planned to be blind, but was going to be male, very tall and very, very muscular.Screen Shot 2018-08-27 at 11.22.02 am.png
  2. There are five benders in the opening sequence. The first is Roku (the Avatar before Aang) who demonstrates the power that the Avatar has to master all four elements. Then we can clearly see that the water bender is Master Pakku from the Northern Water Tribe, the earth bender is Sud and the fire bender is a young Azula. The Airbender though is an unidentified Air Nomad, despite some claims that it could be Monk Gyatso or an older (most likely teenage) version of Aang.gif.gif
  3. When Toph covered herself in full rock armour, she covers all parts of her body expect for her eyes. This was actually an animation error, as the opening in the armour was meant to be for Toph’s mouth and not her eyes.Screen Shot 2018-08-27 at 11.21.48 am.png
  4. The first episode of each book always starts off with Aang lying down.Screen Shot 2018-08-27 at 11.22.59 am.png
  5. This series did actually employ a martial arts consultant (Sifu Kisu) to create more realistic fight scenes and help come up with the bending styles. Waterbending is based upon Tai Chi, Hung Gar for earth bending, Northern Shaolin for fire bending and Baguazhang for air bending.Screen Shot 2018-08-27 at 11.22.44 am.png
